Poetry by Sophya Polevaya

You were
a fruit stone
once
from a distant sweet tree
now appearing
to my eyes
smoothed by
the blue
a pearl
coated
with river veins
carmine in hue.

In coldness
you were
once
blanketed
within the ripples of
water ash
the wet sand
now cradled cosy
within the palm’s grooves
of my hand
a dry river bed.

I feel a pulse...

Tick, tick
tick, tick

More and more
connected to my own
as the heat of my skin
like sulphide
reveals
that you are alive
the poison ampule
once you held
inside
transformed
into a heart beating
a blue flame
butterflied
reminding me
like a timepiece
of your presence
during each minute
passing
and how
I came upon you
in this place
between
a flowing river
and a static desert
rolled in
and by yourself
between
night and
sunrise
the aether ray
half in dark
half in light.
